Chapter 7

House of the Scorpion - Chapter 7
Chapter 7 – Teacher

We learn Matt doesn’t like to leave apartment too often because of how he is treated by the other people living in the Big House. Tom routinely visits Matt along with Maria, and Matt and Tom get in a fight, broken up by Tam Lin. Matt then wanted both Maria and Tom to leave.

Maria and the other children left the Big House to go away to school. Tam Lin tells Matt criticism) that El Patron has made choices to live his life the way he has – “Very Dark indeed is his majesty…” (p 70). Matt is provided with a teacher (an eejit). The Teacher learns that Matt still is not talking. Matt is finally motivated to speak due to a combination of frustration with the Teacher and poor self esteem. The Teacher doesn’t understand Matt’s reaction, and is escorted out by Tam Lin. Matt doesn’t understand what is meant by Tam Lin’s description of her as an eejit. Tam Lin promises to take Matt on a picnic to celebrate the fact he is now talking.

  1. 1) Tom is very devious and evil. He pretends to be a sweet angel to the adults, but to Matt and other children he is malicious.
    2)Tam Lin stops the fight.
3)Maria gets angry at Matt and leaves because she thinks he is mean to Tom.
4)He acts politely, but small things are wrong with his politeness, like when he brings his mom a drink, but it is in a dirty glass.
5)He is strong but kind. He acts very calmly in dangerous situations.
6)The doctor comes more often because Matt gets a cough.
7)Maria leaves because she has to go back to school.
8)Maria and Matt like each other, but Matt sometimes upsets Maria. He does things that he thinks she will like, but she gets upset by them. Maria also sometimes sides with Tom.
9)He describes him as a tree that grew over the whole forest, but with gnarled branches. He said that El Patron made a choice when he was younger which way to grow.
10)It means that the parts of the clones are used to regenerate the original person, in this case, El Patron.
11)Teacher is an eejit, which means she has a computer chip in her brain. She just repeats things over and over again.
12)Matt snapped at Teacher after 5 days of doing the same activities over and over again.
13)He said "I am not a good boy! I am a bad clone!" He thinks that being a clone makes him entirely different than a normal boy.
14)Tam Lin and Matt go on a picnic.

  3. 15) Tam Lin is trying to tell Matt that El Patron was not a good or decent man when he said "If you are kind and decent, you grow into a kind and decent man. If you're like El Patrón...just think about it."
    16) I think that since El Patron is bad while Matt is not, that environment affects behavior more than genetics. El Patron grew up to be evil since he did't have a good childhood while Matt had Celia and Tam Lin to look up to.
