Chapter 16 – Brother Wolf

Matt and Maria make their way through the secret passage and eventually talk. Maria states that she forgives Matt for killing Furball – Matt doesn’t correct her. They talk about religion and whether or not Matt has a soul.


The two see Felicia and Tom in the security monitoring room try to use the cameras to find Matt and Maria. The two of them make for of the dead El Viejo and Felicia says something startling. Felicia killed Furball to punish Matt for how he treated Tom at the birthday party. Tam Lin finds them and leads them out of the passage separately.

    3. She read a story about Saint Francis and how one should forgive animals.
    4. He thinks that dwelling on them is a waste of time.

    Maria accused Matt of eavesdropping in the passage.
    2. Where did they end up? How was it different?
    Maria and Matt ended up in El Viejo’s old room, which was now cold and neglected now that it didn’t have anyone living in it.
    3. Why did Maria forgive Matt?
    Maria forgave Matt because she thought it was an accident, and because she felt a clone couldn’t be held responsible for his actions.
    4. What did Matt think about faults?
    Matt thought Maria had forgiven him because he was like an animal to her, similarly to how one doesn’t hold a dog that had pooped on the couch accountable.
    5. What religious predicament, according to Maria, does Matt find himself in? Her answer?
    Maria believes Matt doesn’t have a soul, but just as Saint Francis preached to a wolf, Maria hopes she can teach mat to have a soul.
    6. How did Tom and Felicia describe El Viejo’s corpse? Why?
    Tom and Felicia described El Viejo’s corpse as wan and pitiful, as El Viejo could have had procedures to extend his life and improve his appearance, yet he chose not to.

    Tom and Felicia searched for Matt and Maria in the Computer Room, via a number of cameras.

    Felicia admits to Tom that she killed Furball intending to frame Matt, as a way to punish him for his cruelty towards Tom
