Chapter 4

Chapter 4 – Maria

We learn that most clones have their mind destroyed at birth and are treated like animals. Matt is different, he is El Patron’s clone. El Patron is rich and powerful and used his money to ensure Matt grew up like a real boy. Emilia shows the apathy of most people to clones by saying “clones aren’t people,” and the maid Rosa repeatedly says “filthy clone.”

When Matt’s identity is determined, the doctor brings him into the servant’s quarters and treats his injuries. Celia is not allowed to see him. However, Maria sneaks in to visit him. She brings him food and will stay with him for the night – getting her into a lot of trouble. Matt does not know what a clone is, but understands he is hated.

  2. 1. How do the children describe clones?
The children describe clones as drooling, mindless aberrations without souls.
    2. Why is Matt brought back inside?
Matt is brought back into the mansion because El Patron, someone everybody fears, wishes no harm to befall the boy.
    3. Where is Matt taken?
Emilia, Stephen and Maria take Matt to the Alarcan Mansion so that he can get medical attention for his foot.
    4. How does Rosa treat Matt?
Rosa treats Matt like and animal that just did something naughty on the carpet, she loathes him more than anything else.
    5. Will Celia be coming to see Matt?
If Maria was punished for visiting Matt, I don’t think Celia is likely to be allowed to see him either.
    6. In a complete sentence(s), describe Maria.
Maria is empathetic and caring, especially towards those who are weak. As well as being kind, Maria also has a fiery spirit no one can seem to control
    7. How is Maria different than the others? What does she do for Matt?
Maria has a generous heart, I can’t see Emilia protecting cats or Furball, but Maria enjoys helping things weaker than her. Maria sees Matt as a pet or wounded kitten, like a doll one must play doctor with. I think Maria’s pity lets her help Matt, brining him food and such.
    8. Why do you think Celia told Matt stories about chupacabras and other monsters?
Celia must keep Matt indoors, for fear of being found by the Alarcans, so she tells him scary stories about monsters
    9. Why does Maria stay with Matt? What are the consequences of this decision?
Maria visits Matt in the night either because she is to young to have learned to be prejudiced, or because she sees matt as an animal in need of help. Whatever her motive, Maria is severely punished for her disobedience and is forbidden to see Matt.
    10. At this point, what is Matt’s state of mind?
By chapter four, Matt still doesn’t understand why everyone hates him; all he knows is that he is different. Matt is also convinced Celia will save him from Rosa.
