Chapter 10

House of the Scorpion - Chapter 10

Chapter 10 – A Cat with 9 Lives

It is El Patron’s 143rd birthday. Matt will be sitting next to him at the birthday dinner and is worried about how to act if El Patron acts “weird.” Celia makes Matt promise to come and hide in the kitchen if something bad happens.

Maria’s dog, Furball, becomes lost and is discovered by Matt to be trapped in the toilet. Matt is sure Tom had put Furball there and determines he’ll use what power he has with El Patron visiting to get back at Tom.

Matt begins taking music lessons from a deaf man named Mr. Ortega. A variety of important people begin showing up for the birthday party, including politicians, celebrities, “Farmers” (drug lords) and Mr. MacGregor (another drug lord and Tom’s father). El Patron’s heath has dramatically improved – he’s actually walking! He lives his doctors one million dollars each. Matt learns more of El Patron’s family history.

  2. 1. What instructions does Celia give Matt?
Celia tells Matt to come strait to her if anything bad happens.
    2. Find a Spanish to English Translator online. Look up Mi Hijo. How has Celia’s attitude toward Matt changed?
“Mi Hijo” means “My Son” in Spanish, suggesting Celia feels a very strong, maternal connection with Matt.
    3. What happened to Furball? What do you think Motivated Tom?
Tom, though it is only implied, stuffed Furball into the toilet and closed the lid, making Furball to drown. I think Tom is in desperate need of constant attention, weather it be positive or negative, so he will go to any extreme to ensure he is noticed.
    4. What was Matt’s plan? Why did he pick this time?
Matt plans to use his support from El Patron to embarrass Tom, by making him eat at the little kids table.
    5. Who is Mr. Ortega?
Mr. Ortega is Matt’s deaf piano teacher, who was so desperate for work he agreed to teach a clone.
    6. What did El Patron’s birthday mean for Matt?
El Patron’s birthday was a day when everyone had to be nice to Matt, because it was Matt’s birthday as well. Matt enjoyed his new power, finally being able to treat people as they treated him.
    7. Who came to the party?
Every major warlord and political leader associated with Opium seemed to be at the party, even a few presidents were there.
    8. Who were the “Farmers?”
Farmers are the governors of Opium, each controlling as certain part of the country and overseeing a certain portion of the drug trade. El Patron is by far the most powerful farmer.
    9. Who is Mr. MacGregor?
MacGregor is El Patron’s right hand man, and the second most powerful farmer.
    10. Why did the people cheer for El Patron? Did everyone cheer? How has El Patron’s health change?
Everybody cheered for El Patron because they were afraid of what El Patron would do if they didn’t. El Patron seems to have aged in reverse, growing a few years younger after the surgery.
    11. How old is El Patron? What question did he repeatedly ask his last visit?
El Patron is 140 years old, though not all of him I that old, or all his.
