Chapter 20

House of the Scorpion - Chapter 20

Chapter 20 – Esperanza

Matt begins the chapter with a fever. He contemplates the fact that he is fourteen years old, and from his perspective, an adult.

Matt returns to the oasis, where he continues to read more about the history of Opium. He learns that eejits are made from illegal immigrants trying to get from Mexico to the United States, having to pass through Opium. El Patron continues to be described as evil. Matt learns that Esperanza Mendoza is Maria’s mother –Maria was told her mother was dead. He plans on telling Maria her mother is alive.

Could Tam Lin and Celia be working on a plan to save Matt? El Patron is growing weak again and thinks Matt is Felipe, his dead son. He begins to think about running away to Atzlan, but not until Emilia and Steven’s wedding – he had to see Maria again.

    1) Being 14 made Matt feel like an adult

    2) He wanted to learn more about the history of Opium and learn about Esperanza, Maria's mother.

    3) The U.S and Atzlan governments let El Patron make Opium because he could stop the illegal immigrants from going across the border. After the farm patrol caught the immigrants they could turn them into eejits, a free labor source.

    4) When eejits die, they are buried under the soil in which the opium is planted to act as fertilizer.

    5) They can't think for themselves, they do what they are told. They don't have any emotions or feelings, a computer chip controls them.

    6) Matt is offended at what he read, he even threw the book into the pond. Although he didn't like what he read it made him start thinking about the whole operation of Opium.

    7) The author of the book, Ezperanza, is Maria's mother.

    8) He was going to tell Maria at the wedding.

    9) El Patron lived at the Oasis with his son Felipe.

    10) Felipe is El Patron's son.

    11) Before leaving for Aztlan, Matt has to inform Maria of his plan and about her mother.
